This is really a perfect piece. I wasn’t aware of the name issue. Nonetheless, I am VERY aware of the networks problems with NIMBYISM and racial profiling.

I really grew disgusted with NextDoor when a neighbor posted a question about wanting to “help” homeless people (who she found loud and unsightly). She immediately dismissed actual input she got from folks who had experience working to help homeless people. One woman who had worked in homeless shelters cautioned folks from criminalizing the homeless. I chimed in and reminded everyone that homelessness is complicated, some homeless folks suffer from mental illness and deserve our compassion. I cited the fact that my uncle ended up homeless and died on the street.

Well, no compassion for the homeless or even folks like us trying to have a nuanced dialogue. Apparently we were all jerks for suggesting SHE might do some self-reflection about why she’s more concerned about people offending her enjoyment of the public space than she is about the fact that folks are suffering in our city.

She chimed in a few days later after scoring an interview in SFGate where the ultimate advice given to “concerned citizens” was to call the police! She and other bullies on NextDoor, promptly patted themselves on the back for standing up for neighbors who “care”.
